Davy turns 2!

Davy loves his animals. We are regularly attacked by the shark and the giraffe frequently eats lunch with us. Also, Davy loves hats. His fireman hat the most but really, any hat will do. He excitedly points them out when he sees them on strangers at the supermarket. Sometimes it's slightly embarrassing. So- put those two favorites together and you get...

some wild and crazy party animals.

I made the little tiny hats late at night the evening before his birthday and when Davy woke up the next morning and saw them all lined up on the counter he laughed and laughed and pointed and had the funnest time taking off the hats and putting them back on. Made this Momma feel good.

It was a low-key party with just the four of us but Davy didn't seem to mind.

I sure do love this boy.

Happy Birthday to my darling boy!

birthday boy

Today is his day so that meant:

letting him play with the laundry basket.
(clean clothes toppled onto the floor)

letting him watch Octonauts while he ate his breakfast.
(chocolate milk on the couch)

helping him look for his plastic toy shark when he saw a shark on the t.v.
("sha!")

then adding "dollar store" to my list of errands when we couldn't find it.
(so excited to find another 'sha'!)

letting him walk in the parking lot like a big boy.
("watch out for cars!" "hold my hand!" "don't drop your shark!")

letting him eat a biscuit for lunch.
(strawberry jam on my shirt)

and lick a spoon full of frosting while I frosted his birthday cake.
(spoon later found under Audrey's bed)

The name David is Hebrew and it means Beloved. We could not have chosen a more appropriate name for our boy. Beloved is a understatement. He's been so loved from that very first miracle moment that we found out I was pregnant. Then we found out he was a boy. Then when he was born he stopped crying and looked at me when he heard my voice. Then he had his Dad's eyes and my hair. Then we found out he had the sweetest little mischevious personality. Then he called me "Mommy" and counts everything "two, two, wee"...

.....the miracles just keep on coming.

Davy, you certainly are beloved by all of us. And we love having your in our family. You're my son. My happy, brave, exuberant boy. And I know that everyday I have with you (even looking for sharks and wiping jam off my shirt) is a miracle.

Happy Birthday.

love, Mom

this boy

this boy:

-pulled a vent out of the wall in the chapel during church last Sunday, and threw cheerios down the back of the pew in front of us.

-but then folded his little chubby arms so sweetly during the sacrament prayer.

this boy:

-daily hits his sister with whatever happens to be in his hands.

-then gets so sad when he's in trouble, and happily gives his sister a hug to say he's sorry.

this boy:

-throws whatever he can get his hands on when he's mad and pouts on the floor.

-then surprises me by saying "bee!" (please) in his happy tiny voice while I'm doing dishes in the kitchen when he wants some chocolate milk.

this boy:

-wants to do things by himself, gets bothered when I try to help, and runs away when I call him.

-but lays his head on my shoulder when he's tired and rubs my back. or crawls into my lap with his blanky and pulls my hand around his waist.

this boy:

-keeps me guessing, keeps me humble, keeps me running and on my toes. and even when we're butting heads (sometimes literally) this boy makes me happy.

except for this morning.

when he broke a lamp.

we have...

It has been cold and rainy outside for the past few days. We have been drinking mexican hot cocoa.

Also, I have been sick. Head cold. Sneezing, runny nose, can't sleep at night.

The apartments have been busy and full of the drama that I hate. I have to keep reminding myself that we have bigger goals and that this situation is only temporary.

We have been swimming. Audrey's learned to swim by herself with her floaties and it's a pretty big deal.

Audrey has been saying "are you thinking what I'm thinking?" all the time and it's making us laugh because she doesn't quite get the concept.
"Mom, are you thinking what I'm thinking?"
"I don't know, what are you thinking?"
"There's a fly on the window."
watching sister play outside

David has finally started saying "momma" and it is the sweetest thing ever.

He also yells "Da!" Whenever Justin calls his name.

gorgeous peonies!

We have been experimenting with new recipes. Eating lots of fruit and avacadoes and zucchini and tomatoes. On Sunday we fed the missionaries a BBQ quinoa salad that I was afraid they would hate.
They both went back for seconds.

We have been getting a lot of questions about our weight loss and how we eat now. I'm contemplating a blog post about it.

We have been spending as much time as possible away from our tiny apartment. All four of us crammed in for too long equals everyone being grumpy. We've been visiting parks, taking walks along the river, (and throwing lots of rocks in the water) and getting out of town whenever possible.

We have been in Utah.

And I have made a fool of myself yet again during another late night discussion with family.
I don't do well when it gets past midnight.

boy oh boy

Last night I scooped Davy up from his crib, and as he grabbed his blankey and snuggled into my shoulder I thought, "He smells like a baby."

Too often anymore he smells like what he is: a rambunctious little boy. His hair seems to be always messy, his shirt always dirty, his socks always missing.

But last night he was fresh from the bath clothed in Johnson's pink baby lotion and clean jammies. I snuggled him close to me and breathed in deep.

He's different than his sister was, this boy of mine. Boy, oh boy (!) is he different. He's into everything, all the time. He's mischievous and silly. His patience is short and his temper is quick. He likes to explore and push boundaries. He races to the fridge every time it's opened to try and play inside. He messes up his sister's room. He dumps things on the floor. He runs around in a circle and waits for us to laugh.

He makes me tired.

But he's sweet too- so darling and sweet. He grabs his blankey and comes running to my arms one hundred times a day and we snuggle and snuggle and snuggle. He points to the Cheerios box on top of the fridge and then laughs and does a little happy stompy dance on the kitchen floor while I pour some into a cup for him to take on whatever adventure he's going on next. (I'll find Cheerios in my purse later.)

I can't wait to see where this boy takes us and how he'll teach us. Already the stockpile of toy cars and dump trucks is beginning to rival the princess shoes and tiaras.

I just hope I'll be able to keep up.

my boy turns 1

I keep looking at my watch today and thinking back to where I was a year ago...

5am -we were on our way to the hospital

11am- sitting in the labor and delivery room

6pm- had my epidural

9:25pm- holding my son for the first time

11:03pm as I write this- in a dark, quiet hospital room unable to sleep, gazing at his tiny face

we've celebrated Davy today and he deserves it. He's such a happy boy, loving and obedient. He fills our days with laughter and sloppy open mouthed kisses and messy living rooms.

presents from Grandma Bunn- he loved them

(and had a lot of help opening them)

Before we had children, when we were trying so hard to conceive, Justin came to me and told me about a dream that he'd had. He and I were kneeling around a bed saying family prayer before bedtime. And with us were two children in their pajamas. A girl, who was the older of the two with pretty blonde hair, and a little boy.

My purpose in writing this blog is sometimes for my Mom, or my friends, or Audrey's birth family. But mostly, it is for my children. When they read this in 5, or 10, or 20 years I need them to know that they are loved. so much. That they are wanted. That they matter. That they are meant to be mine and that they belong in our family and that I love being their mother.

David, you've been my constant companion for the past year (because you've demanded it :). My little sidekick. I've loved every minute of it. I am sad that you're getting older and aren't that tiny baby that I stared at all night a year ago, but I'm happy because you're growing and learning and I'm so proud of you. You're my son. My baby boy. I love you.

Happy Birthday

love, Mom
