Finally one day my Dad called and had found a business associate that lived in Portland and was leaving on a trip for two weeks. He kindly said that we could stay in his house while he and his family were gone. It wasn't a permanent solution, but it bought us a little more time, and that last night in the hotel I slept a little easier.
The next day we unloaded our uhaul into a tiny storage shed in the pouring rain. with no help. Just Justin and I hefting and lifting for four long wet hours. David played/fell in a huge puddle and then was crying because he was cold and wet. We were all cold and wet and exhausted. Morale was definitely low.
But, it turns out that the house we were staying in was beautiful and cozy, with a big backyard, and a friendly dog named Callie. David started calling it "Callie's house" and staying there was almost like a vacation. Our kids played on their toys and swung in their hammock, we saw hummingbirds and a woodpecker, and fed apples to their horse, Jack. Even now, David still asks to go back to "Callie's house" daily.
While staying there Justin and I both kept applying for and interviewing for any job that we could find. At one point i jokingly told Justin that either things would work out or we would drive back to Idaho and this would just be the worst vacation EVER. A week later I got a job managing a 70 unit apartment community that came with a 2 bedroom apartment as part of the compensation. Both Justin and breathed a big sigh of relief.
